Founded by Eliza Wu and Jake Xia in 2022, Corner emerged from the belief that digital tools for finding and recommending places had not evolved meaningfully in decades. Wu, previously in venture capital, and Xia, a self-taught engineer who left the University of Waterloo, built Corner to recreate the magic of real-world word-of-mouth discovery—but online. Wu famously bootstrapped the company by liquidating her retirement account, while Xia engineered the product end-to-end from the earliest prototype.

The app launched in 2022 with a mission to “put your world on the map”. Users can pin their go-to spots—restaurants, cafes, museums, parks—and create shareable maps for friends. With an emphasis on visual storytelling, Corner lets people document their experiences with photos, descriptions, and location notes. Rather than relying on algorithmic feeds or ads, the app tailors suggestions based on friends’ recommendations and personal curation preferences.

Within a year, Corner’s community had spread across 400+ cities worldwide. Its most passionate users—called “curators”—help surface hidden gems through themed lists and neighborhood guides. Users can also save locations from platforms like Instagram and TikTok directly into Corner, making it a cross-platform memory and discovery engine.

Corner is mobile-first (initially iOS-only) and designed to inspire real-world connection through digital organization. Its algorithm learns users’ tastes without relying on invasive tracking or intrusive content. With a focus on real recommendations from people you trust, the platform reinvents what it means to explore socially.

The company is based in New York City and remains a lean team of under 10. Backed by a small group of angel investors, Corner operates independently and has not disclosed its total funding. The long-term vision: make it easy for anyone, anywhere, to map their world—and share it.
